Decals from Your Calligraphy

With Valentine’s Day being right around the corner, calligraphy is great to know for gift tags, beautiful hand written cards, or vinyl decals! Decals can be added to tumblers and mugs to add a personalized touch to your gifts. In this tutorial I am going to use the Procreate and Cricut Design Space apps to demonstrate how to upload your digital design and make a decal of your own!

Begin by creating your design in Procreate, it is best to use black because it stands out more which makes it easier to upload into Cricut Design Space. If you would like to use multiple vinyl colors, create a different layer in Procreate for each color. Once the design is complete, save it to your iPad as a JPEG. If you are using multiple colors, select one layer at a time to save them individually.

From there, open the Cricut Design Space app on your iPad and click on "New Project."

Tap ”Upload”, “Select from Photo Library”, and add the design you created for your decal. Once it is open, you will have to remove the background and the spaces in between the letters. To do this, just tap on the “Remove“ button in the bottom left hand corner and tap the areas you would like to remove, then click “Next.” The following page is for smoothing out any rough edges that are left. Tap “Smooth” to even them out a bit (if needed), then click “Next.” To finish uploading the design just click “Insert.”

Once the design in inserted, tap on the ”Edit” button to change the size and color of your letters. Tap on the design, “Basic Cut”, choose the color, then ”Apply” to change the color of the design. This is especially helpful for keeping track of multiple colors of vinyl that you would like to use. After changing the color, click ”Make It” in the top right hand corner. If everything looks good on the ”Mat” page then tap ”Next” to continue to cut the design out. Connect to your Cricut and cut the design!

Once the design is cut, you will need to weed out the excess vinyl from your design. Then, place the transfer tape onto your decal and peel the back off of the decal. Next, transfer it carefully to the surface of your choice. Press down firmly to get the decal to stick to the surface. Last, peel back the transfer tape carefully to ensure the decal does not get removed.

Now you’re all done and have a unique gift for your significant other, friend, or family memeber for Valentine’s Day! Join me next week as I share some more ideas for special Valentine’s Day gifts!
